Before the development of freeways U.S. highways lost their individual names and a numbering sequence was applied. Highway 80, following the previous Bankhead Highway, came out of Texas, across New Mexico to Tucson. It then turned north to Florence and on again to Florence Junction where it was joined by U.S.60 coming down from the north. Queen Creek, named for the nearby Queen mine in Superior, was the first obstacle faced by highway builders as the roads moved west to Phoenix and then California. The Queen Creek Bridge carried the highway across the creek bed keeping it safe through the rare periods of flash flooding. The bridge was completed in 1916, is still rated in satisfactory condition and now carries El Camino Viejo serving the ranching families in the area.
