Standing alongside the Okemah Post Office at 418 W. Broadway, this is a red granite monument with the name "ASTRONAUT WILLIAM R. POGUE" on its front side. The slanted top of the monument is engraved:

Astronaut William R. Pogue Pilot of Skylab 4, November 16, 1973 - February 8, 1974. Longest manned flight (14 days, 1 hour, 15 minutes) to date. Traveled 34,500,000 miles and orbited earth 1,214 times. Logged 13 hours, 31 minutes in two space walks. Oklahoma Heritage Association 1975

Skylab 4 was the third manned Skylab mission. William Pogue, a Colonel in the USAF was born January 23, 1930 in Okemah, OK and was of Choctaw heritage. He passed away from natural causes at the age of 84 on March 3, 2014.
