Grant County is located on the Kansas border with Oklahoma. The area was part of the Cherokee Outlet and was opened to white settlement in 1893. The County was originally named "County L" but a local election changed the name to Grant County, after President Ulysses S. Grant. Medford became the County Seat in 1908.

The Grant County Courthouse, at 112 E. Guthrie Street, is a three-story red brick building, constructed in 1909. The courthouse is occupied by the Grant County administrative offices and court, the Sheriff, Department of Human Services, as well as the OSU Cooperative Extension offices.
