"Le théâtre de l'Archipel est le nom du nouveau théâtre de Perpignan, un ensemble de plusieurs bâtiments dont la salle principale fait 1200 places et qui est sur l'emplacement de l'ancienne gare des bus de la ville, dans le prolongement de l'espace Méditerranée.
Officiellement, ce théâtre a le nom de "Centre Dramatique National de Théâtre" mais il est surnommé "Le Grenat", à cause de son architecture qui explique ce nom à forte connotation catalane.
Ce théâtre est particulièrement original dans la mesure où les bâtiments sont éclatés en plusieurs ilôts au lieu d'être tous compris dans le même bloc, comme c'est le cas habituellement. Le Corum de Montpellier est ainsi, par exemple. Ici, pour identifier les bâtiments, ils sont de styles différents, de couleurs différentes - avec une forte tendance au rouge. Le théâtre lui-même, la scène, est de loin le plus grand des bâtiments, il s'agit d'un bloc cublique rouge sombre sur lequel sont écrites de nombreuses maximes dans de multiples langues. La salle accueillant le public est le fameux grenat, une sorte de soucoupe volante très originale. Les autres bâtiments servent de réserves, de salles d'entrainement ou d'échauffement, d'entrée. Elles sont jaunes ou recouvertes d'affiches, voire en tôles ondulées.
Ce théâtre voulu par la ville de Perpignan s'inscrit dans la continuité de la rénovation urbanistique de la ville qui a eu pour porte-étendard la gare TGV, elle même un exemple d'édifice multicolore et monobloc. Ainsi la ville se dote d'équipements en cohérence esthétique les uns par rapport aux autres.
La grande salle du théâtre est à jauge variable, elle peut accueillir entre 600 et 1200 places. 400 places supplémentaires sont dédiées à une salle de création. La superficie totale du théâtre de l'archipel est de 4850m2.
La programmation est plutôt éclectique, le but avoué et l'amélioration de la représentativité de l'art méditerranéen en général et catalan en particulier dans le paysage culturel national, voire international. Il faut donc s'attendre à des spectacles de danse, des concerts d'œuvres catalanes, italiennes, espagnoles, et de façon plus larges venant des pays Nord-africains.
Techniquement, le projet est récent. Il s'est articulé en plusieurs phases. En 2005 a eu lieu le concours d'architecture, remporté par l'Atelier Jean Nouvel (Paris) et le cabinet Metra et Associés (Paris). Notons que la gare TGV de Perpignan, elle avait été remporté par un catalan. 2006 et 2007 furent consacrées au design, puis est venue la construction proprement dite, dans la foulée."
