The story of Pat Hennessey is a tragic one. He was an Irish freighter who traveled the Chisholm Trail. On July 4, 1874, while riding with three other men on a wagon train on the Trail, they were attacked and massacred. Stories vary from whether the attackers were Indians, or white horse thieves dressed like Indians.
Over the years, Hennessey's bones were moved for various reasons, but they are thought to be located at this current location. The land was purchased in 1939 by U.S. Marshall Malaley and he established these memorial gardens. The grave site has a homemade rock headstone, and is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. The area is located in a semi-rural residential area on the northwest side of town.
