The lighthouse stands in the Pat Hennessey Memorial Gardens. The land surrounding Hennessey's grave was purchased by U.S. Marshall Malaley in 1939 and he proceeded to build a garden area to honor the Irish freighter who was massacred on July 4, 1874, and for whom the town is named.
The lighthouse is made of rock and is 24 ft. high. When built, it had a large light at the top and colored lights shined out of the windows. As we drove to see the Memorial Gardens and Pat Hennessey's grave site, it was quite a surprise to come upon this large lighthouse in the middle of a rural setting.
