Pat Hennessey was an Irish freighter who traveled on the Chisholm Trail. On July 2, (some sources say the 4th), 1874, he and his drivers were ambushed west of town, and murdered. Hennessey's body was found tied to his wagon wheel, charred. Stories vary as to the culprits. Some say Indians; others say white horse thieves dressed like Indians. This monument is not the burial place of Hennessey. He is said to be buried four blocks to the west.
The monument stands on two concrete platforms. The monument is gray granite, with two inscriptions:
Hennessey, Pat Hennessey Who gave our town thy name, While time lasts, we will sing thy praise. Thou'lt live for aye and aye in fame. by Mrs. Annette B. Ehler
