Cette chapelle a été construite après la peste de 1630. Les habitants de Manteyer s’étaient réfugiés après le torrent du Moulin à la Chevalerie pour échapper à la PESTE ! Ayant survécus à cette maladie ils louèrent l’intervention de St ROCH et construisirent cette chapelle là ou la peste s’était arrêtée. Le 20 Août 1674 la délibération des consuls de Manteyer décide d’honorer ce saint le premier dimanche après le 15 Août ( cf Emile Allemand ).
Suivant les recherches effectuées par un de nos concitoyens aux archives départementales de Gap, il apparaît que les lieux dédiés à la célébration de la sainte fête de Saint Roch, ont été décidés en l’an 1674, le 20 août.

Voici retranscrit en notre français une partie de ce texte.

« L’an mil six cent septante quatre, le vingtième jour du mois d’août à l’issue de la messe paroissiale du dit lieu se sont assemblés les ci-après nommés pour délibérer des affaires du comté par devant Guillaume Consolin châtelain du lieu- dit, ainsi que François Chevalier, Claude Reynaud, Georges Allemand, Estienne Burle, François Isoard, François Léautier, François Gallice tous manants et habitants du lieu-dit ».

Les consuls évoquent « la période ou le pauvre lieu du comté du dit Manteyer fut affligé du mal contagieux (la peste) qui a frappé la région en 1630, dont la cinquième partie des maisons et des habitants furent atteints, et leur fut ordonné de sortir de leurs maisons et de se retirer en des cabanes qui furent faites pour eux en un coin du terroir appelé les Costes de la Chevalerie ,tirant du coté de Veynes ».

Les consuls reconnurent que « grâce à Dieu, à sa sainte Mère, et à Monseigneur Saint Roch, protecteur du mal, l’épidémie pu prendre fin ».

Ils promirent « d’honorer et célébrer la sainte fête à l’avenir le propre jour du dimanche, de faire planter une croix que l’on appellerait la croix de St Roch, (remplacée par la petite chapelle) de faire une procession générale, la jeunesse au cor, avec hautbois, flutes et musettes et toutes autres réjouissances ».

Ils promirent « de faire construire une chapelle dans l’ancienne église paroissiale, et un tableau où il sera peint l’image de Monseigneur St Roch ». (Actuellement dans l’église paroissiale).

La première cérémonie en ce lieu doit dater de 1675, il y a donc 340 ans que les paroissiens de Manteyer, de La Roche des Arnauds et des communes voisines viennent honorer notre saint patron en ses lieux.

This chapel was built after the plague of 1630. The inhabitants of Manteyer had taken refuge after the Moulin de la Chevalerie to escape the plague! Having survived this disease they praised the intervention of St ROCH and built this chapel where the plague had stopped. On August 20, 1674 the deliberation of the consuls of Manteyer decides to honor this saint the first Sunday after August 15 (see Emile Allemand).
Following the research carried out by one of our fellow citizens in the departmental archives of Gap, it appears that the places dedicated to the celebration of the holy feast of Saint Roch, were decided in the year 1674, August 20.

Here is transcribed in our French part of this text.

"The year one thousand six hundred seventy-four, the twentieth day of August at the end of the parish mass of the said place were assembled hereinafter appointed to deliberate affairs of the county in front of Guillaume Consolin local chaplain - said, as well as François Chevalier, Claude Reynaud, George German, Estienne Burle, François Isoard, Francois Léautier, François Gallice all peasants and inhabitants of the locality ".

The consuls mention "the period when the poor place of the county of Manteyer was afflicted with the contagious disease (plague) which struck the region in 1630, of which the fifth part of the houses and inhabitants were affected, and was ordered to leave from their houses and to retire in huts which were made for them in a corner of the soil called the Costes de la Chevalerie, pulling on the side of Veynes.
The consuls acknowledged that "thanks to God, to his holy Mother, and to Bishop Saint Roch, protector of evil, the epidemic could come to an end".

They promised "to honor and celebrate the holy feast in the future the proper day of Sunday, to plant a cross that would be called the cross of St Roch, (replaced by the small chapel) to make a general procession, the horny youth, with oboe, flutes and musettes and all the other festivities. "

They promised "to build a chapel in the old parish church, and a painting where the image of Bishop St Roch will be painted". (Currently in the parish church).

The first ceremony in this place must date from 1675, it is 340 years since the parishioners of Manteyer, La Roche des Arnauds and neighboring communes come to honor our patron
