"Anstey URC started in 1851 as a Congregational Church using a small cottage, long since demolished, higher up Bradgate Road. Next, and much nearer to the present church, a barn was bought to cope with a growing congregation. A factory standing on the site of the present church was bought in 1861 for conversion.
By 1879 the present church had been built and shortly after, the gallery was added. The schoolroom was built onto the rear of the church between 1861 and 1879. A Pole & Atkins organ was purchased in 1924.
An adjacent row of buildings was bought in 1898, and then sold a little later to purchase the old manse and the extra two storey schoolrooms. This row was extended in 1963 by a hall in memory of Rev. Ellis Bell who died in service to the church. This conversion included a new kitchen and toilets.
From early in the 20th century Anstey Congregationalists were nurtured and supported by Oxford Street Congregational Church. This was a large Leicester church with inspired vision to establish churches in the county and Anstey was a beneficiary.
A variety of fellowship and recreational activities, some of which still continue, made Anstey 'Congs' a very active church. Although in 1975, the membership voted to join the United Reformed Church, we are still seen as 'Congs' by the more elderly people in the village. We are conscious of our heritage and of our responsibility to continue the work and witness of Jesus Christ in the local community and beyond. We hope that we will continue to accept new initiatives in worship and share always in those which encourage us to broaden our faith and spiritual awareness in our future years of committed service to our Lord."
