Peterborough County - Municipal Flags on Waymarking.com

There are two flagpoles in front of the Peterborough Airport terminal building. One displays the Canada flag. The other displays the Peterborough County flag.

The flag is a banner of arms, blazoned, "Vert a sword point downwards Argent pommel and hilt Or surmounted by a fess barry wavy of six Argent and Azure." The green field represents Ireland, ancestral home of many early residents, and recognises Samuel de Champlain (French: champs = field), who explored the area in 1615. The sword is in recognition of the soldiers who fought in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, who later settled the area. The wavy stripes represent the Otonabee River and the many lakes in the area.
The flag was adopted on 7 August 1986, when three Ontario communities were in competition to have the highest percentage of their citizenry involved in physical activity - the flag of the winning city was to be flown at the city halls of the other two cities (Timmins, Belleville). Peterborough won and needed a flag to complete the job. The coat of arms was adopted in 1951.

It's worth noting that the same sword and wavy stripes motif is used in the official Coat of Arms for the City of Peterborough (visit link) as well as the logo for Trent University
