"Organized March 3, 1849, from Newton County and named for Alexander McDonald, Revolutionary War soldier. "

From the Illustrated History of McDonald County: (link)
" It has been quite a difficult task to ascertain the origin of the name, but all the old settlers state that the county was named after an officer in the Revolutionary War. Dr. Duval and W. C. Price think he was one of Marion’s men." (I did not find Alexander McDonald's name on the muster rolls for Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox") Interesting that there isn't much more on this gentleman.
