While walking around Nowra finding quite a bunch of Waymarks I noticed small garden, and the plaque for William Batt. The plaque reads:
WILLIAM BATT
MEMORIAL GARDEN
This garden is dedicated to the memory of William C Batt
who greatly contributed to the development and welfare
of the Shoalhaven Region both personally and as a former
Shire Clerk of the Shoalhaven from 1948 to 1966.
As I am not a local to the Nowra or Shoalhaven region I hadn't heard of this Councilman, or his contribution to the community. The name, "The William Batt Memorial Garden" adopted by the Shoalhaven City Council in 1992.
The raised island, between two arms of Bridge Road was built by the Moore Brothers "stone from the Illaroo Road Quarry and was designed by W.C. Batt."
