Hennessey is a town at the intersection of Highways 81 and 51, with a population of about 2200. Founded as an agricultural town, its growth exploded in the late 1950's with the discovery of additional oil. Conoco constructed a gas plant here, and in the 1990's, dozens of oilfield service companies worked out of Hennessey. Even today, the highways are bustling with oil tankers and oilfield equipment trucks.
This mural is one of the famous Bob Palmer murals which can be found throughout the state. It is painted on the south wall of 100 N. Main, at the northwest corner of Highway 81 and Oklahoma Street. On the east end there is a large painted American flag. Across the mural are scenes at oil rigs, with workers doing what the workers do. On the west end is an oilfield truck. In the corner under the name Palmer is a list of the mural students who worked on this work. Bob Palmer is a retired Professor of Art whose students learned firsthand about painting murals, as they contracted out to dozens and dozens of town in Oklahoma and beyond.
