Excerpt from Austin American Statesman dated 12/20/1933.
Under the Resettlement Administration the federal government bought tracts of land for subsistence homesteads of two to five acres. They built roads, parks, and a community center. The houses varied from three to five rooms in size. The remainder of the homestead was to be used for a garden, orchard, and pasture.
The government provided the cottages, outbuildings and orchard. They also provided seed and fertilizer for the first year's garden crop along with the necessary tools. A cow, a flock of chickens, and two shoats were also provided at the option of the homesteader.
The homesteaders made a small down payment and the remainder of the price was amortized over a 20-year period with low interest rates.
The homes were constructed by CWA workers. Dalworthington Gardens project will be completed and ready for occupancy April 1, 1934.
