Before 1914 the Ypres Military Riding School used this wood for its exercices. The old butte, a large mound on the north-east side of the wood, was used as rifle butte for musketry training by the Belgian Army before WW I. Inside the butte are tunnels. The Germans took the wood on May 3, 1915. On September 27, 1917 the Australians retook the wood and the memorial obelisk of the 5th Australian Division now crowns the old butte.
