Texas Historic Site Atlas

The Comparet Building is believed to be the oldest commercial building remaining on the courthouse square. Constructed c. 1880, the property was constructed for the general merchandise business of John M. Comparet. It continued to house the Comparet family business for successive generations until sold in 1931. In addition to the Comparet business, the building has housed the post office, pool hall, saloon, community quilting center, and antique store. The Comparet Building is an excellent example of late 19th century commercial architecture and is virtually unaltered.
