The Centenary of Federation commemorates the process where the six separate 'self-governing colonies' of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia agreed to unite and form the Commonwealth of Australia, when the Constitution of Australia came into force on 1 January, 1901 (arguably the first day of the 20th century).
Sir Henry Parkes, the Premier of the Colony of New South Wale travelled much of NSW in the 1890s garnering interest in the concept.
