About 1881, Charles P. Boon opened his first grocery business on the north side of the courthouse square (1/2 of Lot 8, Block 7) and presumably constructed a frame structure to house the business. By 1886, Boon was in partnership with Robert Crist and operating under the name Boon and Crist. Within a few years, their business expanded to include tinware, hardware, watches, and jewelry. Eventually Crist acquired full control of the business and by the 1930s offered dry goods, farm equipment, and leather goods such as saddles and harnesses in three adjacent buildings on the north side of the square. His son, Charles Crist, later assumed control of the business and added the hardware, lumber, grain, and wool and mohair businesses. In 1937, the three buildings burned and the current one was constructed to consolidate the businesses.
