Congregational Church - Lafayette, Colorado - posted by boB B giB

Now known as the Mary Miller Theater, this one time Congregational Church, one time temporary hospital, one time Christian Science Church and twice a library is home to the Theater Company Of Lafayette, a community theatre company begun in 1996, which produces standard community theater fare.

The church served as a focal building for the miners and their families throughout its existence. In 1918, the structure was converted to an emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic. A small library was started at the church in 1923. Due to lack of membership in the early 1920s, the church was sold to the Christian Science Society.in 1928. At that time the library was moved to the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company Store, but returned to the site in 1964.
From the Architectural Component Form
The Congregational Faith was organized in 1890 and the church constructed in 1892. Much of the funding was provided by Mary Miller, founder of Lafayette. She also helped pay for the preacher until the membership could get organized enough to take over the responsibility. In the midst of the flu epidemic of 1918 the church became an emergency hospital. In the late 1920s, membership dropped and the building was sold to the Christian Science Society. During its life, the building has twice housed a library, and in 1986 was restored and remodeled by the City of Lafayette for use as a community theater. The Mary Miller Theater, as it is known today, is home to a variety of community performing arts. Beautiful stained glass windows grace the east and west walls of the building.
