A former Nottingham Joint Stock Bank / Midland (HSBC) Bank on Peveril Street / Alfreton Road, Nottingham. Unusually thin, it does appear slightly wider at the back end than at the front entrance.

This building currently stands empty, although there are 'To Let' signs outside.

One of the inscriptions shows the year 1829, although the building is probably not quite as old, and that the date may refer to the date the bank was founded.

There are several other bank buildings on Alfreton Road, all are now closed. A sad testimony to the declining fortunes of the area.

"Before the Banking & Co-Partnership Act of 1826 the only Joint Stock Bank was The Bank of England. Before that date banks were privately owned with up to six partners jointly responsible for any debts. The 1826 Act allowed other banks to be formed that could issue shares (stock), thus spreading the risk more widely making them more secure. These early Joint Stock Banks were still small local operations, and the Nottingham Joint Stock Bank would have been one of the first to be founded after the Act."
