Originally a branch of Wakefield and Crewdson bank, Kendal's bank (10 miles away). Built from new, the former building on this site must have been flattened and the grand edifice we see today, erected.
All the Kendal bank branches were taken over by the Liverpool bank. Eventually becoming a branch of Martins group, who were taken over by Barclays banking. Barclays closed the branch.
The flats above still have the address, Bank Chambers.
The local council have tried to beautify this junction with cobbling, pedestrianisation of Ash Street and planting a tree. The tree replaced a felling.
