"Sur cette place large et lumineuse, typiquement charentaise avec ses façades claires, ses toits de tuiles et ses grands arbres, c'est vers un arc de triomphe surmonté d'une indolente sculpture que nous nous dirigeons, ce jour gris et chaud de l'Assomption. Nous espérons y trouver un peu de fraîcheur, car il s'agit en réalité d'une fontaine.
Elle fut érigée en 1757 sur la place qui alors portait le nom des Capucins avant d'être "baptisée, à la Révolution, Place de la Liberté et d'être par la même occasion dotée d'une guillotine très active.
Au sommet du monument, comme pour jouer à celui qui sera le plus fort, un homme couronné et une femme joignent leurs mains et poussent de l'avant-bras.
Le royal personnage n'est autre que l'Océan Atlantique qui se prend pour Poséidon.
La femme un tantinet sévère mais bien en chair est la Charente.
La nonchalante Charente. La capricieuse Charente qui a transformé en s'en retirant, le port de Brouage voisin en un village campagnard en pleine terre, étonné de ses inutiles remparts.
Le groupe représente le mariage entre les deux célébrités, l'union de leurs eaux, le moment où l'une se jette dans l'autre pour s'y perdre.

Elle ne dira pas que depuis son mariage que rappelle cette sculpture, elle s'est amenuisée et a perdu de sa superbe.
