Hagen a.T.W. is embedded in a valley of the Teutoburg Forest and therefore also in the middle of the TERRA.vita UNESCO Global Geopark. As far back as the 16th century, sweet cherries were grown on a larger scale in the municipality of Hagen. Around 1900, Hagen had become the most important fruit-growing area between Osnabrück and Münster. Also, the cherry blossom in Hagen has become a popular destination. In the course of the 20th Century, however, the economic importance of fruit growing in Hagen steadily declined, as intensive plantation fruit growing and the orchards with tall, large-crowned trees was uneconomical. Nevertheless, these very old trees with their enchanting blossoms in the spring today still are an indispensable element of the beautiful landscape of Hagen.

For decades, the community Hagen a.T.W. encourages the private re-planting of cherry trees. In the year 2000 the tourism association was founded, one of whichs tasks is positioning the "sweet cherry" in the tourism market. This resulted in the cherry festival held every two years since 2003 with the coronation of the Hagen Cherry Queen. Since 2005 Hagen even has a cherry monster.

The sculpture was errected for the "cherry of the year" 2014.
