In 1999, the US Postal Service issued a set of international-rate airmail stamps featuring “scenic American landscapes.” According to the USPS, these stamps were meant to show the “mountains, canyons, and swamps that comprise our country’s diverse and majestic terrain”. Over the next ten or so years, similarly themed stamps were issued as needed whenever these rates changed (which was almost every year). By the time international airmail ceased as a separate entity in 2013, there were quite a few different designs in this series.

The series started out with some familiar scenes (classic views of Niagara Falls and Mt. Rainier) but eventually branched out to include some scenes from a “road less travelled.” Such is the case with this stamp which shows a river running through a wooded area of northern New Hampshire. (The USPS must have considered this location a little off the beaten path too as they held their first day of issue ceremony over 450 miles away in Rochester, NY.)

The photograph used for the stamp was taken by Jerry and Marcy Monkman of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It shows this scene at sunrise with a little fog which adds interest and depth. My picture was taken in the afternoon and looks like a bunch of trees. The 72 cents paid the standard airmail letter rate to Canada and Mexico.
