Co-Premiers of the Province of Canada
Sir Louis Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864) and Robert Baldwin (1804-1858) led a reformist movement to establish responsible government in the Province of Canada during the colonial area. Henceforth, the Cabinet needed a majority of the elected assembly to pass bills into law, and the governor followed the advice of his ministers on all internal matters. Through the work of this remarkable political partnership, colonists gained control over domestic affairs - an important step towards Confederation.

Sir Louis Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864) et Robert Baldwin (1804-1858) ont dirigé un mouvement réformiste pour créer le gouvernement responsable de la Province du Canada durant la période coloniale. Désormais, le cabinet devra obtenir l’appui de la majorité de l’assemblée des élus pour adopter les lois et le gouverneur devra tenir compte de l’avis de ses ministres concernant les affaires internes. Grâce au travail de ce remarquable partenariat politique, les colons ont obtenu le contrôle des affaires intérieures, une étape important vers la Conféderation.
