"Very damaged in 1918, the church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Hubert benefited from an exemplary restoration due to the architect A. Collin, which allows him to continue to claim a place of first order in the architecture of the beginning from the 13th century in the region.

The history of Brétigny is inseparable from that of Quierzy, whose royal house was one of the most important places of power in Merovingian and Carolingian times. Destroyed during the Norman invasions, the monastery of Brétigny was then transformed into a simple priory.

The relics of Saint Hubert - nephew of the great Saint Hubert of the Ardennes - preserved in the church and the stone of the same name, near this one, are still the object of a pilgrimage.

Preceded by a short nave redone formerly reserved for the parish under the title of Saint Nicholas, the part corresponding to the priory includes a false transept on whose arms are grafted two square chapels, and a choir with flat beds formed of two bays.

The bell tower is seated on the southern cross, illuminated on the south by two windows surmounted by a small rose. A turret of original staircase gives access to the floor of the belfry, redone in the 1920s. The chapels - that of the north was rebuilt identically - are vaulted ogives falling on the capitals with hooks. Their windows, like those of the braces, have their pedestals furnished with columns of offense.

The choir is of exceptional quality. Much higher than the transept, it has a first bay, short and blind, corresponding to the chapels. In contrast, the second span, of square plan, is flooded with light.

The side walls are pierced with slender double lancets, delicately underlined, inside and out with tortoise columns and a toric molding.

The wall of the bedside, with its spectacular effect, superimposes three lancets and a large rose with twelve lobes, a composition visibly inspired by that of the choir of the cathedral of Laon, the first quarter of the 13th century.

The capitals with hooks and the cuttings are of a more evolved style than those of the chapels and raise the question of a slight anteriority of these last ones.".

"Très endommagée en 1918, l’église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Hubert a bénéficié d’une restauration exemplaire due à l’architecte A. Collin, qui lui permet de continuer à revendiquer une place de premier ordre dans l’architecture du début du 13ème siècle dans la région.

L’histoire de Brétigny est inséparable de celle de Quierzy, dont la maison royale compta parmi les lieux de pouvoir les plus importants aux époques mérovingiennes et carolingiennes. Détruit lors des invasions normandes, le monastère de Brétigny fut ensuite transformé en simple prieuré.

Les reliques de saint Hubert - neveu du grand saint Hubert des Ardennes - conservées à l’église et la pierre du même nom, près de celle-ci, sont toujours l’objet d’un pèlerinage.

Précédée d’une courte nef refaite et autrefois réservée à la paroisse sous le titre de saint Nicolas, la partie correspondant au prieuré comprend un faux transept sur les bras duquel se greffent deux chapelles carrées, et un chœur à chevet plat formé de deux travées.

Le clocher est assis sur le croisillon méridional, éclairé au sud par deux fenêtres surmontées d’une petite rose. Une tourelle d’escalier d’origine donne accès à l’étage du beffroi, refait dans les années 1920. Les chapelles- celle du nord a été rebâtie à l’identique- sont voûtées d’ogives retombant sur les chapiteaux à crochets. Leurs fenêtres, comme celles des croisillons, ont leur piédroit garni de colonnettes en délit.

Le chœur est d’une exceptionnelle qualité. Beaucoup plus haut que le transept, il comporte une première travée, courte et aveugle, correspondant aux chapelles. Par contraste, la seconde travée, de plan carré, est inondée de lumière.

Les murs latéraux sont percés de doubles lancettes élancées, délicatement soulignées, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur par des colonnettes en délit et une moulure torique.

Le mur du chevet, à l’effet spectaculaire, superpose trois lancettes et une grande rose à douze lobes, une composition visiblement inspirée de celle du chœur de la cathédrale de Laon, du premier quart du 13ème siècle.

Les chapiteaux à crochets et les tailloirs sont d’un style plus évolué que ceux des chapelles et posent la question d’une légère antériorité de ces dernières."
