"Die evangelisch-lutherische Kirche St. Katharinen ist eine spätgotische Hallenkirche in der Osnabrücker Altstadt. Ihr weithin sichtbarer Turm, der seit Jahrhunderten das Stadtbild prägt, ist 103 m hoch.

In der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts entstand vor den Mauern der Osnabrücker Binnenburg im Bereich der Stadthöfe des Adels eine kleine Kirche, die anfangs noch zum Kirchspiel des Domes gehörte und 1248 erstmals namentlich als „St. Katharinen“ erwähnt wird. Die Wahl des Patroziniums verdankt sich vermutlich der Katharinenverehrung, die aus dem Heiligen Land zurückgekehrte Pilger in Osnabrück eingeführt hatten. Der heutige Bau wurde ab etwa 1300 mit mehreren Unterbrechungen errichtet und um 1500 weitgehend vollendet. 1543 wurde in St. Katharinen die Reformation eingeführt. Während der Friedensverhandlungen von 1643 bis 1648 bot sie der schwedischen Gesandtschaft Raum für Gottesdienste und Begegnungen. Die Nähe des seit 1669 errichteten Schlosses, das von 1673 an als Residenz der evangelischen Fürstbischöfe von Osnabrück diente, war Anlass, St. Katharinen auch als Hofkirche zu nutzen.

Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde St. Katharinen beim letzten der Luftangriffe auf Osnabrück am 25. März 1945, einem Palmsonntag, infolge der Bombardierung ein Opfer der Flammen. Die Kirche konnte 1950 wieder eingeweiht werden. 1990 musste sie für eine notwendig gewordene Grundinstandsetzung des Innenraums geschlossen werden. Nach aufwendigen Renovierungsarbeiten konnte im November 1992 das Gotteshaus wiedereröffnet werden und zeichnet sich heute durch eine schlichte, klare Architektur aus. Zusammen mit dem Schloss, der Poggenburg, dem Ledenhof, den Klostermauern des Barfüßerklosters und den alten Pfarrhäusern bildet die Kirche ein bemerkenswertes Ensemble aus alten Zeiten. Der Innenraum ist geprägt vom Formenwillen der Gotik. Eine verhaltene moderne Ausgestaltung setzt besondere Akzente und lädt zur Einkehr und Meditation ein. Neben den Gottesdiensten finden in St. Katharinen immer wieder Kunstausstellungen und Konzerte statt. Für kirchenpädagogische Erkundungen stehen Handreichungen zur Verfügung.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Katharinen is a late Gothic hall church in the old town of Osnabrück, and its tower, visible from afar, which has shaped the cityscape for centuries, is 103 m high.

In the first half of the 13th century in front of the walls of Osnabrück a small church was built, which initially belonged to the parish of the cathedral and in 1248 was named "St. Katharinen" the first time. The present building was built from about 1300 with several interruptions and around 1500 was mostly completed. 1543, the Reformation was introduced in St. Catherine. During the peace negotiations from 1643 to 1648 it offered the Swedish legation space for worship and meetings. The proximity castle built 1669, which served as the residence of the Protestant prince-bishops of Osnabrück from 1673 on, was occasion to use St. Catherine also as a court church.

Towards the end of the Second World War, St. Katharinen was a victim of the flames during the last of the air raids on Osnabrück on 25th March 1945, a Palm Sunday, as a result of the bombing. The church was re-consecrated in 1950. In 1990 it had to be closed for a necessary renovation of the interior. After extensive renovations, the church was reopened in November 1992 and today stands out for its simple, clear architecture. Together with the castle, the Poggenburg, the Ledenhof, the monastery walls of the Barfüsserklosters and the old vicarages, the church is a remarkable ensemble of ancient times. The interior is dominated by Gothic forms. A restrained modern design sets special accents and invites to contemplation and meditation. In addition to the services, there are art exhibitions and concerts in St. Katharinen. In the bell tower hangs a 4-voice bells from the Bochum club.
