So in honor of the 50th year of Wurstfest, the Wurstfest Association and the New Braunfels Historic Outdoor Art Gallery recently celebrated the debut and dedication of a new mural on the grounds of Wurstfest.
Entitled “Fenster ins Wurstfest” (yes, that’s German), the acrylic-on-brick mural measures 17 feet by 75 feet, and was created by local artist Brent McCarthy. The piece is a window into the food and fun that is Wurstfest — including depictions of the pins that adorn the hats of the Opas (the members of the Wurstfest Association).
Organizers also used the dedication to announce a new book by New Braunfels residents Alton Rahe and Darvin Dietert, a historic tome titled “50 Years of Wurstfest.” Rahe is a well-known historian. One of his most recent works, “History of Mission Valley Community” tells the story of this Texas community — complete with a myriad of photographs.
Dietert is an accomplished tuba player, and a member of the New Braunfels-based polka band, Oma and the Oompahs.
Come check out the mural, music, food and fun of Wurstfest, which runs from Oct. 29 through Nov. 7. The official kick-off of this year’s Wurstfest will begin at 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 with the “Biting of the Sausage” in the Wursthalle.
Proceeds from Wurstfest benefit a variety of projects in New Braunfels. Its host, the Wurstfest Association, is a nonprofit corporation with a mission to promote New Braunfels’ economy and the city’s rich German heritage.
