"Dans combien de générations de Luziens faudra-t-il recommencer?? Aucun des vivants d’aujourd’hui ne devrait, en tout cas, avoir l’occasion d’assister à une opération semblable à celle qui s’est jouée mardi sur la plus célèbre des demeures de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Lohobiague Enea.
Les travaux d’entretien et de rénovation de la Maison Louis-XIV, bâtie en 1643 ne s’achèvent jamais vraiment. Chaque année, Henry Leremboure, l’héritier passionné de la famille Lohobiague, programme avec les services de l’État un plan des opérations à effectuer sur le Monument historique (les propriétaires financent 35 % des travaux?; la Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC) 40 %?; le Département 15 % et la Ville 10 %). Elles sont plus ou moins importantes, plus ou moins visibles, plus ou moins complexes selon les crus. « Cette fois on a fait le ravalement de la façade sud, côté port. Mais surtout, on a eu l’autorisation de restaurer le garde-corps en fer du balcon de la place Louis-XIV. »
« On ressort la forge?! »
Mardi, à voir les artisans de l’entreprise landaise de métallerie dirigée par Benoît Goudard manier les quelque 400 kilos d’acier à l’élévateur entre les platanes, difficile de deviner la dimension historique et la délicatesse de l’instant. Après un mois hors de leur socle, toutes les pièces étaient replacées, et fixées de nouveau à la pierre blonde du balcon.
À la connaissance de Henry Leremboure, le garde-corps était d’origine et « n’avait jamais été déposé ». En tout cas, « on le supposait ». Le chantier a démontré que ce n’était pas si simple et que cette première fois était peut-être bien en réalité une seconde fois. Le travail dans l’atelier de l’entreprise désignée par Catherine Matveieff, l’architecte du Patrimoine a fait parler l’acier.
La nature historique du chantier et la procédure drastique à suivre pour rénover y contribuent. « On doit travailler au maximum à la manière d’autrefois, décrit Benoît Goudard. En gros, sur nos chantiers contemporains – soit 90 % de ce qu’on fait – on travaille avec des outils numériques. Mais là, on ressort la forge?! »
Un plaisir non dissimulé pour ce passionné ancien Compagnon du devoir et du tour de France. Et puis, dit-il, la pièce luzienne « est exceptionnelle. Les barreaux sont entièrement forgés et non pas moulés. C’est rare. Ça veut dire que tout a été fait à la main, au marteau ». En revanche, une fois le fer mis à nu, l’artisan et ses collègues ont découvert « que le garde-corps n’était peut-être pas d’origine car des barreaux ont été ajoutés. » Il a pu être façonné, avant l’ère industrielle, au XVII è ou courant XVIII è siècle.
Deux hypothèses : soit l’original a été rallongé après coup, soit il ne s’agit pas de l’original. Dans ce cas, on peut imaginer qu’il a été mangé en quelques décennies par l’air salé puis remplacé un par un autre récupéré ailleurs et mis aux bonnes dimensions. Le mystère reste entier."
