During the early-1920's, the Rouge River was dredged to give Great Lakes freighters access to Ford Motor Company's expanding Rouge manufacturing complex. In addition to dredging the river, several drawbridges had to be built to accomodate the large freighters. The Fort Street bridge was built by the Bethlehem Steel Bridge Corporation in 1922.
