This St. James Episcopal Church building was constructed in 1894 at a location in town. In 1896, the church building was moved one-quarter mile to its present site. This is a one-story frame building with clapboard siding. In 1896, the bell tower was added to the southeast corner, and the entrance was moved to the tower and the original entrance made into a Gothic window. In 1958, an office was added to the rear, and a social hall to the west side.
St. James is the oldest Episcopal Church building in continuous service in Oklahoma. It was the first and only Episcopal Mission in the Creek Nation of Indian Territory. The Creek Mission was organized in 1893 and met in homes until this building was built. Its congregation is the only pre-Statehood (1907) congregation in Wagoner County still occupying the same building since its inception. The church building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
