St. James Episcopal Church has an illustrious history having been in continuous operation since it was built in 1894. This is a one-story frame church with clapboard siding, The original rectangular building has a front facing gable. The church originally stood at the corner of E. Cherokee and S. Casaver Streets, but was moved one-quarter mile to its present location in 1896 to make way for a new City Hall.
The building has an entrance on the southeast corner beneath a bell tower. The bell tower was added in 1896 and the entrance was moved to the tower area; the original entrance was made into a Gothic window. In 1958, an office was added at the rear of the building, and a social hall on the west side.
The church is the oldest Episcopal Church in continuous service in Oklahoma, and the only pre-Statehood (1907) congregation in Wagoner County, occupying its church building since inception. This building is a Treasure!
