At the southwest corner of the Wagoner County Courthouse is a beautiful memorial to "Buck" Garrison, a ranger for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Beneath the flags of the United States and Oklahoma, a stone walkway leads to circular patio surrounded by shrubs and flowers.

A bronze shield reads:

OKLAHOMA
Game Warden
Melvin "Buck"Garrison
February 18, 1946 - December 26, 1971
We enjoy the beautiful wildlife and rich natural
resouces in Oklahoma because of the many
officers who have dedicated their lives to wildlife
law enforcement.

Ranger Garrison gave his life, the ultimate
sacrifice, while attempting to arrest a ring of
illegal commercial fish poachers in the Hoffman
Bottom area of Lake Eufaula.

May we never forget our loss and the words
written on his tombstone:
"Buck loved God. He loved His creation.
Thus, he chose a Game Ranger's life as his vocation."
Department of
Wildlife Conservation

A fascinating side note. The patio stones in the walkway are embedded with the footprints of various animals.
