A Brazos County Sheriff’s Department officer located the statue, named “Thor,” along Batts Ferry Road in south Brazos County. Bryan police Sgt. Wayland Rawls said the department is continuing to investigate, but there were no suspects Sunday.

“It was very close to the Brazos River,” Bryan school district spokesman Phil Sulak said. “How it didn’t end up in the Brazos River, I don’t know.”

He said the area where the Viking statue was found was covered with beer cans.

The 6-foot-6-inch Viking statue was stolen from the Bryan High campus sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning. The statue, which weighs about 700 pounds, was unbolted from a platform on East 29th Street in front of Bryan High’s Blue Campus.

The statue was reported missing Saturday morning, the day after the Crosstown Showdown basketball game between Bryan High and A&M Consolidated High School.

Sulak said district officials hope to learn Tuesday if security cameras positioned outside the school were able to capture the culprits on tape.

He said there are cameras located outside the school that are always on, but he and Principal Mike Cargill were unsure how much, if any, of the act can be seen on tape.

Sulak said the statue suffered a few scratches and its horns had been bent, but other than that, it was in good condition. He said it was not known if the horns were bent on purpose by the people who stole the statue or if it was done accidentally during the theft.

“About five or six of our maintenance workers went out and retrieved it,” Sulak said. “It is now at our auxiliary service center under lock and key.”
