Lieutenant Bower, commander of
HMS Sandfly [and either three, or five crew, depending on 'your source'] was killed in the Solomon Islands in 1880. A bronze plaque is at the base of a sandstone 'sarcophagus' erected for Judge Bent, esq, and it reads:
Lieutenant BOWER R.N.
Buried 2½ feet deep from this spot is the skull of
Lt. Bower, R.N.
He was killed by natives in the Solomon Islands on
October 15, 1880.
The HMS Cormorant made an expedition to the Islands
in May, 1881. Lt. Bower's skull and a necklace made
of his teeth was handed over to … ???
The last part of the inscription is hidden by the white pebbles at the base of the tomb. Being behind a spiked iron fence, and with many people around exercising their dogs, in the Off-Leash Dog Area, I wasn't going to climb on over to get a full view.
