Castlemaine station, goods shed, island platforms, along with water columns and signal box are important because of their strong association with the development of rail services in Victoria. The face brick railway station in the Victorian Free Classical style was constructed in 1862 with local granite quoins and plinth and elaborate eaves brackets. The Island platform building was constructed in 1914 and also has substantial platform canopies, but built of iron. The buildings also include the Goods shed and singal box
