DESCRIPTION DE L'OEUVRE

L’œuvre est située au cœur du quartier chinois, à l’intersection des rues Saint-Urbain et De la Gauchetière. Elle est composée de sept panneaux en béton préfabriqués et présente une scène de la mythologie chinoise où sont réunis différents animaux qui doivent élire leur roi. Dans le bas de la composition, un roi sur son cheval est suivi par son valet qui transporte les bagages. Au centre, un cochon sur un nuage porte des habits d’agriculteur et tient un râteau. Plus haut, sur un autre nuage, se tient un singe prenant la position du pélican. Il porte un costume d’arts martiaux et a dans ses mains un bâton. Dans le coin supérieur gauche, un palais est déposé sur un nuage.

Le singe, un des signes astrologiques chinois, est réputé être le plus malin des animaux. Selon la légende, le roi singe est né d’un œuf de pierre et possède des pouvoirs magiques.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ARTWORK - (Translation)

The work is located in the heart of Chinatown, at the intersection of Saint-Urbain and De La Gauchetière streets. It is composed of seven prefabricated concrete panels and presents a scene from Chinese mythology where are gathered different animals that must elect their king. At the bottom of the composition, a king on his horse is followed by his valet who carries the luggage. In the center, a pig on a cloud is wearing farmer's clothes and holds a rake. Higher up, on another cloud, stands a monkey taking the position of the pelican. He wears a martial arts costume and has a stick in his hands. In the upper left corner, a palace is deposited on a cloud.

The monkey, one of the Chinese astrological signs, is reputed to be the smartest animal. According to legend, the monkey king was born from a stone egg and possesses magical powers.
