Thurso doit son nom à un ministre des Postes qui connaissait son histoire... et ses électeurs. Lors de la création du premier bureau de poste, les habitants de cette partie du canton de Lochaber demandèrent au ministre de nommer la nouvelle localité "Cameron" parce que les pionniers du village appartenaient en grande partie à ce clan écossais. Le ministre dut refuser étant donné qu'il y avait déjà une localité canadienne de ce nom, mais il proposa le nom de "Thurso", qui est une petite ville du nord de l'Écosse et d'où les habitants de Lochaber étaient originaires.

Le canton de Lochaber lui-même doit son nom à un district fort boisé du comté d'Inverness, en Écosse. La municipalité du canton de Lochaber, Canada, fut érigée le 1er jullet 1845. Le 16 janvier 1886, la municipalité du village de Thurso était érigée en vertu du Code Provincial. L'année suivante, soit le 4 octobre 1887, la paroisse Saint-Jean L'Évangéliste de Thurso (ainsi nommée en l'honneur du premier missionnaire du canton, l'Abbé John Brady), était érigée canoniquement. Au mois de décembre de la même année, la paroisse était érigée civilement.

En dressant les armoiries de Thurso, le Collège Canadien des Armoiries s'est appliqué à rappeler les origines de la fondation de Thurso. C'est pourquoi le fond des armoiries de Thurso est "rouge"; cette couleur ayant été empruntée au blason du comté d'Inverness, en Écosse. Les "trois barres d'or" sont extraites des armoiries de la famille Cameron avec cette différence que les barres qui figurent dans les armoiries des Cameron sont rouges sur un fond d'or. Le "lion" est le symbole de la force, du courage, de la magnanimité, il est aussi le symbole principal des armoiries de l'Écosse. Toutefois, le lion des armoiries écossaises est rouge au lieu d'être d'argent comme dans le armoiries de Thurso. La date de son apparition dans les armes de l'Écosse est incertaine, certains auteurs sérieux croient que le lion écossais dérive probablement du lion qui figurait dans les armoiries des comtés de Northumberland et de Huntingdon. La chose n'est certes pas impossible si l'on considère que plusieurs rois d'Écosse étaient issus de ces deux familles. Il apparaît pour la première fois sur le sceau du roi Alexandre III, roi d'Écosse de 1249 à 1285, le conserva lui aussi sur son sceau.

Devise : "Concordia et Fidelistas"

La devise de Thurso se traduit par: "La Concorde et la Fidélité". C'est la même devise que celle portée par le comté d'Inverness et rappelle de cette façon l'origine des premiers habitants de Thurso.
