"Elle est érigée en 1756 par les chanoines de Saint Médard à la suite de l’incendie du bâtiment précédent datant du XIVe siècle. Cette église a régulièrement changé de propriétaire et de statut revêtant tantôt la fonction paroissiale, tantôt la fonction abbatiale.
Elle est aujourd’hui désacralisée et fermée au public depuis la suppression de la paroisse en 1968. La tour médiévale et le porche néoclassiques ont été classés en 1936.
La paroisse Sainte-Marguerite fut érigée en 1288 par l'évêque de Tournai, Michel de Warenghien. Les travaux de construction avancèrent lentement. Commencés au 13e siècle, ils se poursuivent encore au milieu du 14e siècle par la construction de la tour.
Incendiée en 1723, on ne conserve de l'ancienne église que la puissante tour. A l'intérieur, on remarquera une chair de vérité du 19e siècle. Sous Louis XIV, la paroisse fut supprimée, et l'église, la maison pastorale ainsi que ses dépendances furent cédées aux chanoines réguliers de Saint-Nicolas-des-Prés qui en firent leur abbaye.
L'église Sainte-Marguerite est la seule église abbatiale que Tournai ait conservée."

"It was erected in 1756 by the canons of Saint Médard following the fire of the previous building dating from the fourteenth century.This church has regularly changed ownership and status, sometimes taking the parish function, sometimes the abbey function.
It is now desecrated and closed to the public since the suppression of the parish in 1968. The medieval tower and the neoclassical porch were classified in 1936.
