Donated by funds raised by the National Memorial Ladies -- a nonprofit group of volunteers that attends military burial services at Houston's National Cemetery -- the Fallen Warriors Memorial is a solemn dedication to the 600+ soldiers from Texas who gave their lives fighting the war against terrorism, mostly focusing on those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan (since, lest we forget, Operation Enduring Freedom includes other parts of the globe as well). It was dedicated on October 6th, 2012.

The 75-by-65-foot memorial's main artifacts are:

(1) An 8-foot tall granite centerpiece featuring a bronze statue of the traditional battlefield cross, i.e. boots next to a rifle with bayonet attached and helmet on top. The 4-sided granite pedestal includes a map of the Middle Eastern countries where the soldiers lost their lives, as well as several quotes and words of inspiration.

(2) Four granite walls surrounding the centerpiece and featuring the engraved names, ranks and military branches of each Texan killed during the Middle East conflicts. The names are grouped by their military operations:
* OIF - Operation Iraqi Freedom (2 walls)
* OND - Operation New Dawn
* OEF - Operation Enduring Freedom
The names are listed in chronological order with their fallen date, rank and branch of service. Those who perished first are at the beginning of the list, in order to potentially allow more names in the future should the need ever arise.

(3) About 500 engraved brick pavers and 14 large light granite blocks engraved with memorial quotes placed around the perimeter of the memorial, each donated by individuals and corporations throughout Houston and Texas.

(4) Five flagpoles at the rear of the memorial, representing each branch of the military.

(5) Four red benches at the perimeter, donated by the Rotary Club.

(6) A Guest Book podium.
