This monument, with a statue depicting a Union soldier, stands in central Woburn in Woburn Square, alongside several other war memorials, and near the City Hall and Post Office. On the south side of the monument is a plaque that reads:
"Woburn honors the memory of her sons, who fell in the War for the Union and Freedom 1861-1865. The Spirit of Liberty lives in the Ashes of its Defenders."
The west side lists soldiers who died in battle, the north side soldiers who died of disease, and the east side those who died in Rebel prisons and of their wounds.
