U.S. Highway 77 runs north-south, 1305 miles from Brownsville, TX currently to Sioux City, IA. It runs 268 miles through the State of Oklahoma, and was constructed in 1926. Usually searching for WPA-constructed culverts, we were very pleased to find this culvert which pre-dates the WPA by a decade.
Watching for low spots in the terrain where a culvert might be placed, we noticed the yellow metal posts placed for safety, and slightly below the grade of the highway, we found the heavy concrete curbing designating a culvert. This culvert is large, with a concrete tunnel approximately nine feet high and nine feet wide, running east-west under the highway, just west of the Cimarron River. Upon digging out the dirt which had built up on the curbing, we found its documentation stamped in the concrete at the center of the curbing on both sides of the highway. It was constructed in 1926 by the Oklahoma State Highway Commission.
