The cut benchmark is located on the west door of St Martin's church. It is on the left side of the door surround near the step. It is heavily over painted in grey paint.

Talk-o'-the-Hill Church. Bolt in West face of tower ; 1.46 ft. above surface [1GL, Manchester to Gloucester, Branch Levelling from Mark No. 152] - probably the same as BOLT: BOLT ST MARTINS CH NW FACE 2.4M N ANG (ODN 204.6724m, AGL 0.5m), assuming that there was major mining subsidence in the late 19th century!

First Primary Levelling, England & Wales (1840-60)
This bench mark was used during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 681.5130 feet [207.7252 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Manchester to Gloucester levelling line. The surveyor's description was No. 152(a). Talk-o'-the-Hill Church. Bolt in West face of tower ; 1.46 ft. above surface (p27).

Visited on 12th March 2012 by Ramblinjohn. Grid reference: SJ 8254 5317. Condition: Good.
The mark is easily found to the left (north) of the door in the west end of the church. Intriguingly the 1879 map shows the height as 681.5 feet, in 1887 there is just an arrow head, and in 1899 the height is recorded as 672.4 feet, a difference of 9.1 feet. One can only speculate that this discrepancy/change may have been caused by mining subsidence." Source: (visit link) (visit link)
