His grave is in the Boggabri Cemetery. His death was recorded in the Canberra Times on 30 June 1948 as:

TAMWORTH LINESMAN
ELECTROCUTED
TAMWORTH, Tuesday.

A linesman was electrocuted to-day while he was working on high tension wires. The victim was William Hattenfels, 36, of Boggabri. Another linesman, George Warner, who went to Hattenfels' assistance, received a heavy shock when he came in contact with his body, but was uninjured. Hattenfels died in hospital soon after admission.
