Aiffres is a town of 5687 inhabitants located in the department of Deux-Sevres, in Poitou-Charentes. The town is located on the edge of Niort (prefecture), is crossed by Guirande and covers an area of ??2571 hectares.
Aiffres is part of the Communauté d'Agglomération du Niortais (CAN).
Aiffres has seen many evolutions during its history:
- demographic developments (1152 inhabitants in 1962 to reach about 5418 today)
- evolutions of name (the name "Aiffre" appears only in 1166) ...

Two hypotheses are advanced by Father Autexier as to the origin of the name "Aiffres". According to him, the commune could take its name from a colony of Africans who settled there or from a Gallo-Roman, named "Afer", owning a villa there.
The fact remains that the name of the town has taken many forms of writing since antiquity. Small preview:

- 988: Aifre in pago Niortensi
- 1166: Aiffre, the name of the town has, then, almost his current spelling.
Then, the appellations continue to evolve, and we can find other spellings such as: Afria, Ayfres, Effre, Esfres, Saint Pierre d'Aiffres or Aiphres, at the end of the 18th century.
Despite its multiplicity of names throughout the ages, the town has managed to retain its identity and heritage.

Deux hypothèses sont avancées par l’Abbé Autexier quant à l’origine du nom « Aiffres ». Selon lui, la commune pourrait tenir son nom d’une colonie d’Africains venus s’y installer ou bien d’un Gallo-Romain, nommé « Afer », y possédant une villa.
Il n’en reste pas moins que le nom de la commune a revêtu plusieurs formes d’écriture depuis l’antiquité. Petit aperçu :

- 1166 : Aiffre, le nom de la commune a, alors, presque son orthographe actuelle.
