Of the six buildings that comprised the campus of the University of Mississippi in 1848, the Lyceum is the only one still standing. It has acquired several additions over the years with the first expansion occurring just ten years after it was initially built. The north and south wings were added in 1903 and a west façade was added in 1923. This west façade is so similar to the east façade that it’s hard to tell the front of the building from the back. But thanks to the students from the class of 1927 who placed a clock above the east portico, we know that the image on the postal card shows the east façade.
The Lyceum, along with several other buildings is on the National Register of Historic Places as the “Circle Historic District.” The iconic building has become just that as its familiar façade has been incorporated into the official crest of the University of Mississippi.
Some notables who have attended “Ole Miss” are Pulitzer Prize winning author and U.S. stamp subject, William Faulkner, three Miss Americas (Mary Ann Mobley – 1959, Lynda Lee Mead – 1960 and Susan Akin – 1986), former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and his son, two-time super bowl quarterback Eli Manning.
