This is a small, rather nondescript culvert, but it is still doing its job after 80 years.

After driving Oklahoma roads for decades, we are just now discovering the vast number of culverts hiding under the roads, built by the WPA 80 years ago to carry the water from creeks that was devastating the country roads and causing considerable problems for the local farmers getting their crops to market. This is one of those small local culverts funneling the water under the road.
This tunnel is constructed of cut sandstone blocks and measures about 2 ft. by 4 ft. It runs east-west carrying water under N. Broadway, north of Edmond. The WPA shield stamping shows it was constructed in 1938. There is quite a bit of erosion in front of the tunnel openings, and the running water has washed away soil, leaving the culvert under-structure visible.
