Driving along Broadway, you would not know this culvert was there without some supposition and digging. At the roadside, there are guardrails, but no sign of what lies beneath. As you climb down the embankment, it is such a surprise to find this huge stone culvert. Unlike the concrete tunnels prevalent in this area, this tunnel is made of cut sandstone blocks and measures about 9 ft. high and 9 feet wide. A large amount of water must run through this culvert. Water was standing in it at this time, even after a long drought in Oklahoma.
Finding the WPA stamping took some doing. We had to hang onto the guardrail tightly and lean over with our scraper, and dig through a large amount of dirt, guessing approximately where we would find our prize. In the gallery, you can see this process. The shield we discovered shows the culvert was constructed by the WPA in 1937. This find was a treasure!
