St. Paul A.M.E., located at 187 Morgantown St., is one of the city’s oldest churches and the first black church to be built in Uniontown, according to its history.
The church was organized in 1822, but it was not until 1831 did the congregation have a house of worship.
The first church was a log structure and used until 1844 when a brick building was erected. The present edifice was built in 1891.
St. Paul’s was an integral part of the Underground Railroad which passed through the City of Uniontown. It served as a safe haven for runaway slaves seeking freedom in the north.
