In 1941 the War Department acquired 1277 acres of land for an Air Corp training station. The goal was to stage training facilities as far as possible from population centers while being able to move personnel and equipment to combat zones quickly. They certainly succeeded here. Coolidge is six miles from the airport and remains a small farming community. The base changed hands at the end of WWII finally becoming the property of the City of Coolidge. 2018 statistics show 42 aircraft based on the field, predominantly single engine planes and 94% local. There isn't a control tower and operations are restricted to daylight hours.
